Akira Kurosawa • Japan • 1950 • 88mins
AUGUST 26 & 27 • CINECENTA

Fine, fine Japanese cinema.  The first major Japanese film to be embraced by western audiences and one of the greatest to date.  It is a tale of telling tales – four stories, as told by four witnesses, of an alleged rape and murder, each contradicting the other.  Flashbacks within flashbacks weave individual testimonies into a greater narrative on the objective nature of truth itself.  Toshiro Mifune provides a wonderful insight into a character with no consideration for social norms or natural justice – a completely chaotic element in a senseless scenario.

This new 35mm transfer provides a rare and not to be missed opportunity to see this heavy classic.
